Abstract.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the monograph of the Ukrainian theater expert Volodymyr Ryezanov “An Excursus to the Region of the Jesuit Theater” (1910). It is emphasized that this scientific text is a relevant historiographical source, as it contains unbiased, objective, systematized information about repertoire, drama theory and stage practice of the Society of Jesus. It is noted that V. Ryezanov studied the Jesuit drama in the context of its influence on the Ukrainian school theater. It is proved that “Excursus” is not a compilation of translations of foreign language sources available to V. Ryezanov on the subject of the Jesuit theater, this work is based on a large number of primary sources and manuscripts worked out by the scientist. It is concluded that the achievements of V. Ryezanov have an important scientific significance, because he traced the influence of Jesuit drama on the formation of Protestant drama and the appearance of the school polemical play; substantiated the pious attitude of Jesuit dramatists to biblical, hagiographic, historical, and topical political subjects; established the genetic kinship and typological connections of Jesuit plays with medieval theater, old English drama, ancient drama, scholarly comedy of humanists, Italian comedy dell’arte, national poetry; analysed the observance and violation of the normativity of the Jesuit drama; researched the genre definitions of Jesuit authors, as well as the practice of mixing Christian and ancient themes and images; emphasized the great contribution of the Jesuits to the theory of drama and ballet; formulated the reasons for the decline of the Jesuit school theater.
