Abstract. The old problem of artistic abstractedness is intrinsically connected with that of mediation as one of the fundamental morphological qualities of any sign. Now this problem gains attention due to the newly appeared syntactic concepts of subjective perspective and predicative hierarchy. In particular the textual multidimensionality and the existence of oblique and latent subjects of observation, as well as of participation, within the represented flow of events come back to the approbated scenic devices of inner monologue (soliloquy) and contribute essentially to textual integration. In its turn the differentiation of textual segments according to the grades of abstractedness impact upon their subjective or predicative functions enabling thus their mutual transitions and transformations.
The sources of abstraction are implied from the principle of subjective activity that enables disclosing their prerequisites within the general development of psychological processes. The very regulation of movements and motor reactions displays the transformation of the environment by a subject (instead of one’s proper adaptation) and therefore the anticipation and prediction of the coming event. It results in the separation of features from the things that the subject deals with. The principles of the physiology of activity promote in the explanation of the formation of provisionary or transitive textual entities as those of a rehearsal’s probes or a writer’s preparatory rough copies. Such versions are comparable to the so called “functional organs” in physiology or temporary files in computing techniques: they emerge and disappear with the existential life of a text as an organism.
In its turn the development of functional systems becomes the decisive force in the formation of generalizing abstractions (as those differed from the isolating abstractions). It is already the reflexes of orientation and purpose that become the initial steps of such development. Of a particular interest are such phenomena as the transfer of action (the application of the existent habits and the experience as a whole towards the unknown objects) and the formation of cognitive metaphor. The development of transfer demonstrates the role of multifunctional actions as the source of generalization.
These premises of abstractedness within the tissue of an artistic text give grounds for the conclusion that the distribution of the degree of abstractedness depends upon interpretative efforts and is to be considered as a heuristic procedure. It is the so called “morphological box” (F. Zwicky) as the procedure for the selection of the parameters in need, that can be regarded as the explanatory model for the abstractions’ evolvement. This approach discloses the perspectives of abstract spaces of attributes as opposed to objects that would depict textual integration without the attachment to a particular artistic branch, in particular, both music and theatre or literature.
