Abstract.
This article covers the scope of research issues dealing with the arguments supporting the hypothesis that cultural goods — within the processes of production, distribution, and consumption of cultural values — belong to the category of public goods. The study focuses on the contradictions between public and private consumption, private and national production, and material and immaterial goods. Resolving these contradictions forms the basis for substantiating the place of cultural goods within the structure of public goods.
To achieve this aim, the article analyzes the essence of public goods, their main classifications, and the principal theoretical approaches to their justification and interpretation. This analysis is intended to highlight the affinity between the properties of public goods and those specific features of cultural production that distinguish it from other sectors of economic activity, while still leaving it an important component of the national economy and an attractive sector for investment.
The article represents an attempt to further substantiate the inclusion of the sphere of cultural production within the structure of public goods, in accordance with its specific market nature and the particular interdependence between private consumption of culture and collective consumption.
