Abstract.
The article examines Sophia the Wisdom of God as a religious phenomenon, a marker of the Eastern Christian tradition and Ukrainian culture. The article analyzes the eighteenth-century baroque mural ensemble of Sophia of Kyiv in an interdisciplinary context: it provides an interpretation of the iconic subjects and traces the continuity with the Old Ruthenian mural design.
Despite the absence of a developed Sophia iconography, the image of Sophia in the mural paintings of the cathedral is realized through the theology “Sophia — Mary — Church” from the Great Oranta in the central altar (eleventh century) to the “Mother of God in Glory” on the vault of the Western choirs (eighteenth century) in synergy with the Church of St. Sophia. Due to the structure of the sacred space (hierotopia) of St. Sophia of Kyiv, staying there during the liturgy turns into a mysterious action for the faithful, a “living” icon of “Rejoicing in You”.
The cathedral’s painting highlights the implementation of the semantic opposition “Ukrainian Baroque” — “Russian Classicism”, emphasizes the importance of Sophia of Kyiv in the sense of national identification.
