Reality Show: Inside the Picture

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the popular television phenomenon — a reality show. Analysing the contents of the Ukrainian real television, several types of reality shows were identified according to two criteria: the presence of a competition and the content of the plot. The content of reality shows can be divided into show pranks, peeping, transformation, survival, romantic, life situations, travel, audits and judicial. At the same time, reality, peeping, transformation, survival and romantic shows are built on a competitive basis. Separately there are professional and intellectual competitions. The popularity of reality television fits into the framework of their belonging to the mass culture, understandable and close to the majority, oriented to their interests in entertainment. This product is not only meeting needs, but also shaping public opinion. Reality shows are the place where the image and its referent, frame and reality, screen and everyday life collide.
Typical Ukrainian reality show is based on the content of the plot, some of them are built on a competitive basis. Separately, there are professional and intellectual contests. The basis for the emergence and development of such programs is the hidden tendency to search for a lost referent in conditions of hyper reality not only for the viewer, but also for the participants in their quest to fill the void of reference.
